Hereby presenting an excerpt from A Book of the Country and Garden (1903) by H. M. Batson. It tells the story of today’s Free Friday Vintage Coloring Page which is an illustration by F. Carruthers Gould and A. C. Gould.

“Dr. Capel, the late rector of a neighbouring parish, for instance, could not easily be reproduced, for which his parishioners certainly ought to feel thankful. If he passed a man who omitted to touch his hat to him, he would make haste to deprive him of that necessary gear.”

Hereby presenting an excerpt from The Craftsman magazine (April, 1902). It tells the story of today’s Free Friday Vintage Coloring Page which is one of the designs on John Ruskin’s grave (the Ruskin Cross at Coniston).

“The shaft, in these old monuments, is often carved with allusions to human life; the head with divine symbols. So here the patterns on the shaft form a kind of short pictorial biography, beginning at the bottom on the east, and going round with the sun.

The young Ruskin began as a poet, and attained some distinction as a verse-writer in magazines before ever he found his vocation as a writer of prose. Here under the arch at the foot of the stone is a young singer with his lyre and laurels, somewhat classical and not very passionately
inspired.”

Hereby presenting an excerpt from Bulfinch’s Mythology (1913) by Thomas Bulfinch. It tells the story of today’s Free Friday Vintage Coloring Page, which is the ornament for Chapter XXIII: Geraint, the Son of Erbin.

“In the midst of a meadow which is here, two forks will be set up, and upon the two forks a silver rod, and upon the silver rod a sparrow-hawk, and for the sparrow-hawk there will be a tournament. And to the tournament will go all the array thou didst see in the city, of men and of horses and of arms. And with each man will go the lady he loves best; and no man can joust for the sparrow-hawk, except the lady he loves best be with him. And the knight that thou sawest has gained the sparrow-hawk these two years; and if he gains it the third year, he will be called the Knight of the Sparrow-hawk from that time forth.”
